Difference between GSM and CDMA iPhone details by Apple

Apple launched CDMA iPhone 4

Apple after a long long wait, has finally launch CDMA iPhone on Verizon (US Carrier). Of course there will be plans to release CDMA phones to countries like China, Japan, South Korea.

Difference between CDMA and GSM iPhone 4

Since CDMA and GSM are very different network, thus there are slight difference on how iPhone operates. Apple just released a page on it for users to reference.

Some of the major call function difference are:

  • Call forwarding
  • Call waiting
  • Caller ID
  • Conference calls
  • Inserting pauses when dialing
  • Hold

Verizon’s CDMA iPhone 4 actually supports GSM too!

iPhone 4 (Verizon) is already Dual CDMA/GSM “Ready”

It is rumored that iPhone 5 might be a dual CDMA/GSM iPhone, meaning you can use it on a CDMA network like Verizon (US), and also use it on GSM network like AT&T (US) or Singtel (Singapore). But in fact Verizon’s iPhone 4 is already armed with Dual CDMA/GSM Qualcomm MDM600 chip, however, due to how it is built, you can’t slot in a Sim Card into Verizon’s iPhone 4. Nevertheless, it means that Apple is definately putting dual chips on the coming iPhone 5, and it might be able to work both on CDMA and GSM network with just a single iPhone model.

Verizon’s CDMA and GSM (Rest of the World) iPhone 4 Comparison (Verizon left)

Overall, the looks and feel of both Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4 is very similar, almost identical! Of course it is the doing of Apple, so as to not to confuse anyone. Most of the internal parts are the same, same processor chip, rams and housing.

But there are some slight difference:

  • Battery is the same 5.25 watt hour capacity, but it is a newer model and weigh lesser, from 26.9 gram to 25.6 gram
  • Sim Slot is gone
  • The Qualcomm PM8028 chip works in conjunction the Qualcomm MDM6600 to provide wireless data connection to the phone
  • The Qualcomm MDM6600 chip supports HSPA+ data rates of up to 14.4 Mbps and CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Rev. A/Rev. B
  • External Antenna are slightly different when assemble
  • Vibrator is quieter, softer feel and makes a better sound when vibrating on table

Verizon released their first iPhone 4 commercial, and ended with “Yes, I can hear you now!”  as a attack to AT&T’s drop calls issue.

Check out the Verizon Ads:

AT&T Response

So how AT&T response to Verizon’s Ad? Of course AT&T have to show off something that Verizon’s CDMA network can’t do – Surf the web while having a phone call.

Here’s AT&T’s Ad:

So people living in the states, what’s your choice? To surf web while on phone or have a phone call that don’t drop as often? Feedback to us!

iFun – Verizon AT&T iPhone 4 Ad Funny Version! [Video]

Remember the iPhone 4 ad that Apple release when iPhone 4 is now on Verizon. Yes, iPhone fans have made this version of the ad that mock at AT&T’s connections. AT&T in US haven’t got good comments since the first day of iPhone launch, finally there is a new carrier in US to share the load from iPhone users.

It is really quite funny, check it out. Have a great laugh, and they have really done a great job on it!

iPhone is finally on Verizon, with Mobile Hotspot Feature

We have heard rumors, talks, news and what so ever that iPhone is going to on Verizon, but people in US has been waiting and waiting. Finally today is the day when Verizon finally gets the iPhone deal! You are now able to pre-order yourself a iPhone 4 on Verizon network, and you will be able to get it by 02.10.11!

But this is not just it, this iPhone 4 will also be able to broadcast itself as a mobile hotspot, which you can share your network from your iPhone 4 to 5 other devices. Cool ya? What’s better, it is seems to be built in… So we might be able to get it, in the next iOS update?

According to crunchgear, iPhone 4 on Verizon’s reception is really good, and the mobile hotspot on iPhone 4 is very cool. I’m happy that iPhone users in US can finally make decision if they wanna stay on AT&T or jump ship to Verizon. The iPhone Carriers wars has been over in most countries, certainly Singapore, which we already have all 3 carriers having iPhones.

iPhone 4 vs EVO 4G vs Droid X SPEED Test!

We all know AT&T slow and drop calls, because iPhone users are complaining non-stop, but is AT&T really slow? I don’t know as I’m living in Singapore, we are lucky that Singapore is a small country and we have relatively standard network regardless it is Singtel, M1 or Starhub. But Skattertech did a test with iPhone 4, EVO 4G, and Droid X on 3 carriers which are AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

So who is faster?

Speed Test: HTC EVO 4G vs. Apple iPhone 4 vs. Motorola Droid X from Sahas Katta on Vimeo.

The Result is shockingly different from most will thought of right? They will expect either Droid X or EVO 4G to win the SPEED test, but in the end, it was iPhone 4 on AT&T that beat both the phones. Although AT&T has been complaint a lot on drop calls and slow network, but it actually win the test by a huge margin. [Skattertech]
