Scan and create PDF via iPhone with Snap2PDF

Many a times when I’m on the move but I need to send printed documents to my clients, I can’t go back to office just for scanning. What’s my option? iPhone! It has been a integrated tool in my life, thus I will always have it around with me. There are tons of scanning documents into PDF apps in the Apple App Store, but which one is good enough? I reviewed Snap2PDF and found it to be quite good and met all my requirements.

Snap2PDF

To scan any documents, photo, bills, receipts into PDF, all I need to do is snap a picture using my iPhone camera app, of course  I can snap the photo in Scan2PDF app too.

After OCR able to recognize the text in the bill, thus searchable

What’s cool about the app is that after snapping the document, you can do image rectification to correct the size and alignment, Gamma correction to make the words easier to read and OCR ( optical Character Recognition) so all the text in the document, bills or even book will be recognized. The PDF generated will be searchable by text too. Pretty cool right? You can also email the pdf directly via the app, so you won’t have a problem getting all the pdfs out of the app.

Please take note that this image was taken at a very low light environment to test the gamma corrections.

After using Snap2PDF for a week, I find it a very handy app. It is definitely an app will that will be very useful when I need a document to be scan quickly and accurately. You can get  from the Apple App Store at $1.99, click here to go to Snap2PDF in App Store

Step by Step guide on iOS 5.1.1 untethered Jailbreak via Absinthe 2.0

Yes, After a long wait, finally iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak has finally been released. You can now download and start your jailbreak via the below links:

Absinthe2.0 MacOSX (10.5, 10.6, 10.7)

Absinthe2.0 Windows (XP/Vista/Win7)

Absinthe2.0 Linux (x86/x86_64)

But how do you proceed with the jailbreak? Don’t worry, just read the below guide:

Step by step guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe 2.0 which I have just done:

1. Download Absinthe from the links above

2. Backup your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Be sure to always do proper backup before proceeding with any version upgrade or jailbreak process. You can either backup via iCloud or to your computer. It is recommended to backup to your computer, as it will be faster. Especially when we need to do phone restore later on.

3. This step is optional, but Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Teams recommends us to clear all data in your iOS device before jailbreak your device. This will speed up the jailbreak process, and also have a smoother jailbreak process.

Anyway to clear all data in your device, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings.

4. Connect your iOS devices to your computer, be it Mac or PC.

5. Open up Absinthe 2.0 which you have just download

6. Click on Jailbreak button and wait for it to finish.

7. Once jailbreaking is done, go back to iTunes, on the left panel right click your device and select “restore from backup” and restore the copy that you have just backup.

8. That’s all, once the restore process is done, then you will have your Jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 device!

Hope you will have a smooth process jailbreaking, and enjoy! 🙂

iReview – Worlddictionary, Instant Translation & Search

WorldDictionary

One issue on dictionary is the time you take to enter into your dictionary app, this is even true for words that are not easily type in for example chinese words. So normally I will be discourage to search up dictionary to know the meaning of the word because of the effort that I will need to put in.

Multi-Language Supports, Instant Translation

Penpower Technology got me to review their Worlddictionary iPhone/iPad app. It is an instant translation app, so what this apps does is instantly translate any words that it can recognize via your iPhone/iPad camera. This will not only help you save effort in typing in the word to find out the meaning, it will also help you when you don’t even know how to enter in the word.

It supports multiple languages, like English, Chinese, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Spanish and more. So I don’t have to switch to any other apps, almost like a one app fits all dictionary.

Overview

After using this app for some time, I found out the on screen recognition software is pretty accurate, I don’t much mistake in the app, and the translation is instant. The only issue I found out is that for some languages, it need data network to lookup for the translation. This might be only issue, as we will normally use translation apps when we are overseas traveling and might not have data connectivity at that point of time.

You can get Worldictionary in Apple App Store @ $7.99

iOS Task Management App Rush! Clear or Steps?

iOS Task Management App Showdown!

A few weeks ago, Macheist, Twitterific and Realmac Software Team have came out with a Task Management iOS App idea/Prototype/Promo Video called Clear. It is one of the most intuitive task management app I have ever seen. It almost make managing tasks a pleasure. Thus it created alot of hype and people are waiting for it to launch.

But makers of popular iOS IM client Verbs today launch a Youtube Video showing their up-coming Task Management App – Steps. It feels and looks very similar to Clear, but of course have its own taste of it.

Both of them looks very sleek and nice, and both will be launching soon. So which will you choose to purchase? And which app will win the heart of more iOS users? Let’s stay tuned and see.

For now, let’s what Clear and Steps bring to the table:

Clear:

Steps:

WorldCard Mobile – You will never need to keep business cards anymore

I don’t know about you guys, but I personally hate business cards. Why? Because I can never seem to find them when I need them and typing in email address and phone number to my phone is always a task that I hate. If you guys hate carrying business name cards that your clients have given you, then you will need WorldCard Mobile

Very accurate and quick

I have given it a try and I found it surprisingly  accurate! I have tested on 2 business name cards that I have got from my clients (I worked as a Business Intelligence Consultant as my day job) and both of the cards are recognized and stored into my contacts with no errors.

It is pretty easy to use, just open up the app, tap on camera button, take a picture of the name card and let it recognize the text on the card. WorldCard Mobile for iPhone is pretty smart, it will recognize name, emails, phone numbers, address, company and department with no issue. Very very useful for lazy people like me who always don’t key in the full information and regret later on.

If you are worried that the app’s recognition  might not be prefect (I agree that nothing is perfect), WorldCard Mobile have a Card holder area in the app, where all the Name Cards that you have scanned will be kept there, with the picture taken. Thus even if the recognition software might have mistake, you will at least still have the picture of the name card available.

Overall feeling of WorldCard Mobile

I love this app, to be able to snap a photo of the name card, and let the app the do rest, is awesome for me. The app is pretty accurate and make little mistake. Thus I will highly recommend this app for all who always get name cards during meetings but always misplace them. If you have tons of name cards, you will be able to enter all of them into this app in no time.

The only factor I dislike about this app is the price. It is $6.99, slightly steep from my point of view, but overall a very useful app even for this price point.

Check WorldCard Mobile at the Apple’s App Store now!

TidyTilt is iPhone’s Smart Cover but its more than that! [Video]

We have seen tons of iPhone Case/Protector out in the market, most of them are very beautiful and cool. But TidyTilt is not just beautiful, it is also very smart and useful! TidyTilt is inspired by Apple’s iPad Smart cover, shaped and colored very similarly to smart cover.

This is a Kickstart Project started by Zahra Tashakorinia and Derek Tarnow — two design students from Chicago.

TidyTilt is an earbud cord wrap, multi-position kickstand, and mount for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. TidyTilt takes up less space than any one of these devices – yet does all three things – without adding something extra to carry.

iPhone Case + Stand

The TidyTilt comes in two parts: a mount that uses a special adhesive to stick to the back of your device, and the kickstand/cover which attaches magnetically. Like the Smart Cover, the kickstand folds up to provide an awesome storage solution for your earbuds when you’re not using them, or to elevate your iPhone for watching movies and showing off your photos.

Do give them your support, as it is really a very cool idea. Check out their demo video below:

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5 is coming soon [Video]

Chronic Dev Team is almost done with their very last part of touching up with iOS 5 Jailbreak. It has been close to 2 months since the launch of iOS 5 and iPhone 4S, but till date, only tethered Jailbreak is available.

If you don’t know the difference, tethered Jailbreak means that everytime your iPhone got restarted, you have to connect it to a computer and go through the jailbreak process to boot up the iPhone. Thus untethered Jailbreak is actually very important to most people, as we are worried we won’t be with a computer when our iPhone accidentally needs restart.

pod2g tweeted:

Tons of questions from my nice followers. Too early to answer. Will work on iOS 5.0.1, will try iPad 2 and 4S after others are ready.

So it seems that iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users will have to wait awhile longer than the rest of the family to enjoy untethered jailbreak.

Check out the demo of untethered jailbreak from Chronic Dev Team:

iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone are the top 3 most desired gadget among kids for this Christmas!

Nielsen just did a survey, among the kids in US most of them want Apple Products for their Christmas this year! With iPad getting 44%, iPod Touch 30% and iPhone 27%, it seems like Apple is really popular among kids.

Apple really have a very special touch in their design of their products. Kids, Adults and Aged all love to use them. Simple is really the way to go for consumer products as the results and surveys all proved so.

Apple TV is now cheaper and named Apple TV 2010

Apple TV is now cheaper in Amazon and they have named it Apple TV 2010 Model. Amazon normally have some clues when it comes to Apple’s product updates. So with this movement of dropping Apple TV price and renaming it to 2010 model, does it means that we might be getting a new Apple TV very soon?

I have been waiting for Apple TV refresh for quite some time, Although Apple TV 2010 Model is not sold in Singapore, but there is just more and more reasons for getting Apple TV. One of them is AirPlay, which you can mirror everything from your iPad/iPhone to your big screen in your living room.

In the recent Steve Jobs Biography, he mentioned that he cracked how TV should work, I really can’t wait for the product that he cracked to be out.
