Apple TV is slowly becoming a serious hobby for Apple

Steve Jobs used to say that Apple TV is a hobby for him. Something that he is still exploring, something there will not make him big bucks if you want to put it in a business sense. But I feel that Apple is slowly treating Apple TV  as a serious hobby, not just a hobby.

Reasons why Apple TV is a serious hobby now:

  1. Mirroring/AirPlay – iPhone and iPad has been 2 very successful product in recent years, and I think almost every house hold should at least have an iPad or iPhone. Having the ability to mirror whatever that is on your iPhone or iPad is going to be a big deal. Imagine the shows that you watch during your bus ride, or the photo you took on your way home. You can just flash it on the big screen TV you have in your living room!
  2. iTunes rental – Having the ability to rent any movie on your crouch is a very temping thing to have on your TV. You have that on your Apple TV
  3. Netflix – Although Netflix is only available in US now.
  4. Bluetooth support – Although it has yet to be announced, but having bluetooth supports, means you will be able to hook up keyboard and mouse/trackpad. You might be able to use Apple TV as a browser in future.
  5. FaceTime HD Support via iPad/iPhone – Guys over at 9to5mac and TiPb did a FaceTime and AirPlay it over to their big screen TV. How awesome is that?
  6. Price – Apple TV pricing at just USD$99 is a impulse buy product, although the features and function it has now are limited, but for just $99. You now can stream movies, rent drama series, see photo from your iPhone and continue the show you are watching on your iPad on your big screen TV. It is a must have product!

I’m very excited for the coming Apple TV generation 3, I’m sure it will support 1080p and who knows what will be install for us!

Apple’s New Ads – AirPlay & FaceTime make it an iPhone [Video]

2 new iPhone 4 Ads

Apple just launched 2 new TV Ads for iPhone 4, advertising the power of AirPlay and FaceTime. Honestly, I think this might be the 2 newest and most unused feature that iPhone 4 have, which users might have forgotten or not knowing the function at all.

I feel that it is good that Apple remind us the users again on this 2 new features and showing us the way it might be useful to us. AirPlay is really a very useful feature especially if you want to share or show pictures or videos to everyone on a large screen. FaceTime is always there when I wish to see my mom’s face.

This 2 features might not be as important as calling or smsing, but when you need it and it is there. The feeling is great. So enjoy the 2 new ads by Apple:

What we will see in iMac 2011? [Prediction]

It is almost time of the year for Apple to refresh their iMac line. So what will we see in the iMac 2011 line?

Some prediction by me:

  • Sandy Bridge CPU for all iMacs
  • i5 for iMac 21.5 inch, i7 default for 27″
  • 8gb ram default for 27 inch iMac
  • 1TB HDD for 21.5inch and 2TB HDD for 27″ iMac as default
  • Better Graphics, might even be nVidia
  • Higher resolution of screen
  • HD FaceTime Camera
  • Thunderbolt for all iMac

Anything else that I have missed out? I really hope SSD to be in 27″ as default, but I highly doubt so.

iPad 2 installed in Ford Truck, now you can FaceTime while… driving..

SoundMan Car Audio put up the first ever iPad 2 in car’s dashboard! Yes, on the first day iPad 2 launch they slot it in. They are really kind of Apple Fan boy yeah, they also mounted the iPad 1 previously? But while in car, I think response and ease of use is the most important, thus I feel that currently there are still no match with iPad, not to mention iPad 2 is so much faster and responsive.

Check out the video as they film the whole process of how they mod their dashboard of their trunk. Pretty interesting and cool:

What we might get in Macbook Pro 2011

What can we see in the up and coming Macbook Pro 2011 refresh?

  • Processor Upgrades – Sandy Bridge is on the way to Macbook Pro 2011, definitely will be seeing it when it refreshes.
  • Liquid Metal Body – Apple has been using Macbook Pro’s Aluminum Full Body for about 3 years, and they have been trying to test out Liquid Metal technology, and have used it to produce the Metal Piece Pin comes with your iPhone which is use to push out your SIM Card out from iPhone.
  • Better Battery Life – What else is more important than having good battery life? Everyone wants their laptop’s battery life to be as good as iPad. It is rumored that Macbook Pro 2011’s Battery life will increase by 2 hours, which will be 12 hours!
  • Better WiFi Coverage – As Aluminum is actually blocking some percentage of the Wifi signal, having a liquid metal body will strengthen Wifi Signal
  • Better FaceTime Camera – Apple hasn’t been updating their iSight camera, and because of FaceTime on iPhone, iPod Touch and soon to be iPad, Macbook Pro 2011 might be the first to get their first FaceTime Camera upgrade with larger megapixel, who knows we might get HD quality FaceTime Camera
  • SSD Option – Apple might slowly phase out Optical Drive, and might replace them with SSD drive as an additional HDD. It is not new that people actually remove their optical drive on their MBP and replace with a SSD, so Apple might take that idea up just like Mac Mini Server which they removed Optical Drive for a extra Harddisk
  • Better heat control – This is actually my wishlist, Apple’s Macbook Pro are really too HOT to be on your lap, although Apple’s reply is MBP is not a laptop but a notebook. But at times, you really need to put them on your lap. So I hope Apple can have better heat controls
  • Cheaper Macbook Pro – It is rumored heavily that Macbook Pro 2011’s price point will drop by 100-200 dollars. Who don’t wish to pay less for more?

That rounds up my prediction for Macbook Pro refresh for 2011 which it rumored to be on March! What do you think? Leave us a comment or tweet to us @usingapple

FaceTime with iPhone 3GS with FaceIt-3GS

iPhone 3GS users, you can finally FaceTime with iPhone 4/iPod Touch or Mac users now! Thanks to iPhoneIslam, they have created a Cydia App which you can download to FaceTime with your friends.

The App is called FaceIt-3GS, you can download it in Cydia App Store, which allows iPhone 3GS users to FaceTime with their rear Camera as iPhone 3GS do not have front-facing Camera.

Check out the Demo video, it is pretty neat!

Apple adds Email Support for FaceTime in iOS 4.1 Beta 3

Apple just released iOS 4.1 Beta 3 to developers, and we are seeing Apple adds email-based FaceTime support in new iOS 4. So in very near future, we can make FaceTime call with non-iPhone devices, for example iPod Touches or iPad.

It is rumored that the next Generation iPod Touch will come with Front-Facing Camera, thus FaceTime Function should be available in iPod Touch too.

Apple is expected to be releasing new generation of iPod Touch this fall, maybe together with new MacBook Air too?

Why Jailbreak iPhone 4? You can FaceTime on 3G!

Earlier this week, Comex have released the new web-based jailbreak on the web. So what is the killer feature if you get your iPhone 4 jailbroken? FaceTime, you can now do FaceTime on 3G network and no longer need any WiFi Connection!

Steps to achieve it:

1) Jailbreak your iPhone 4 via www.jailbreakme.com.

2) Download and upgrade to the latest Cydia package.

3) Open Cydia, Go to Manage then Sources.

4) Click Sources, Edit then add: http://apt.modmyi.com

5) Search for “My3G” — download, and install it.

6) Go through the Rock setup process with a username and password. Open My3G and leave all settings on the default.

7) FaceTime should now work over 3G! — Make sure to “Forget” the WiFi network you are on (via iOS settings) if you want to test it.[9to5mac]

First ever FaceTime Video Chat on AirPlane

This might be the first FaceTime Video Chat on Airplane ever recorded! This will be a huge deal, as now you will be able to video chat with your family members even on plane, through their Wifi, if they provide it. The quality is quite ok, not prefect, we can see that he is breaking out later in the video, but come on, video chatting on a plane is awesome!
