New Mac Mini faster but dropped optical drive

Together with the launch of Mac OS X Lion, 2 new Apple hardware were refreshed too. Mac Mini and Macbook Air. Of course Macbook Air have gotten most of the limelight being the newest addition to the Mac Family line. Many will think that Macbook Air will be the future of laptops, and I totally agree. But will Mac Mini be the future of Mac Xserve?

Future of Mac Mini

The new Mac Mini 2011 has something missing, yes the optical drive. No more optical drive for Mac Mini from now onwards. Mac Mini has never been in spotlight of Mac family line, due to the lack of everything, no screen, no keyboards, no mouse no nothing comes together with Mac Mini. But this is the kind of machine you would like to be siting in your house. Quietly working to keep up with the iMacs, Macbook Airs, Macbook Pros, iPad and iPhone in your household. It will be your house’s Xserve if you want to put it in this way.

What is needed in a home server?

So what is needed as a home server?

  • Low power, but powerful enough for household.
  • Occupy very little space, but has the connections needed.
  • All in one little machine, able to backup, serve music and video to home entertainment center
  • Lots of space for backups or to serve files
  • Quiet

And yes, 2011 Mac Mini have all of it. Now having optical drive removed for all Mac Minis, you will have 1 extra slot for additional Hard disk.

Haven you gotten the new Mac Mini 2011? Tell us what you feel about it!

Real Mac OS Lion’s Gestures [Funny]

Have you upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion? If so, are the gestures above very familiar to you? I’m sure all this gestures drawn by joyoftech are over-exaggerated, but I’m sure some of the less techy users might face one of the few issues drawn.

Huge Changes, less forceful by Apple

In this OS update, although lots of things have changed and Apple introduced a few new gestures too, but most of them are optional. Things like the “natural” scrolling which invert your scrolling can be switch around. Scrollbarless windows can be switched to always show scrollbar. Thus I feel that Apple is quite soft in Lion’s approach this time round.

This might be due to the growing market of Macs, lots of new Mac users, thus changes cannot be too forceful, else they might have too much bad comments/review.

Have you updated to Mac OS Lion? What’s your feedback on it? Tell us!

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is finally out!

Price is King.

Although Mac OS Lion have tons of updates and changes, but Apple priced this massive OS update at only USD$29.99! Price is king, incredible price for such a nice update to your Mac! I’m still in progress of updating to Lion, thus I will only post my review of Mac OS Lion after a few days of usage! Stay tuned!

Apple TV is slowly becoming a serious hobby for Apple

Steve Jobs used to say that Apple TV is a hobby for him. Something that he is still exploring, something there will not make him big bucks if you want to put it in a business sense. But I feel that Apple is slowly treating Apple TV  as a serious hobby, not just a hobby.

Reasons why Apple TV is a serious hobby now:

  1. Mirroring/AirPlay – iPhone and iPad has been 2 very successful product in recent years, and I think almost every house hold should at least have an iPad or iPhone. Having the ability to mirror whatever that is on your iPhone or iPad is going to be a big deal. Imagine the shows that you watch during your bus ride, or the photo you took on your way home. You can just flash it on the big screen TV you have in your living room!
  2. iTunes rental – Having the ability to rent any movie on your crouch is a very temping thing to have on your TV. You have that on your Apple TV
  3. Netflix – Although Netflix is only available in US now.
  4. Bluetooth support – Although it has yet to be announced, but having bluetooth supports, means you will be able to hook up keyboard and mouse/trackpad. You might be able to use Apple TV as a browser in future.
  5. FaceTime HD Support via iPad/iPhone – Guys over at 9to5mac and TiPb did a FaceTime and AirPlay it over to their big screen TV. How awesome is that?
  6. Price – Apple TV pricing at just USD$99 is a impulse buy product, although the features and function it has now are limited, but for just $99. You now can stream movies, rent drama series, see photo from your iPhone and continue the show you are watching on your iPad on your big screen TV. It is a must have product!

I’m very excited for the coming Apple TV generation 3, I’m sure it will support 1080p and who knows what will be install for us!

Apple’s New Ads – AirPlay & FaceTime make it an iPhone [Video]

2 new iPhone 4 Ads

Apple just launched 2 new TV Ads for iPhone 4, advertising the power of AirPlay and FaceTime. Honestly, I think this might be the 2 newest and most unused feature that iPhone 4 have, which users might have forgotten or not knowing the function at all.

I feel that it is good that Apple remind us the users again on this 2 new features and showing us the way it might be useful to us. AirPlay is really a very useful feature especially if you want to share or show pictures or videos to everyone on a large screen. FaceTime is always there when I wish to see my mom’s face.

This 2 features might not be as important as calling or smsing, but when you need it and it is there. The feeling is great. So enjoy the 2 new ads by Apple:

DC Comics to launch their new series on iPad together with Traditional Comic Books

This is something we have never seen before. Comic Publishers have now recognize the importance of new media, like iPad. Thus DC Comics are going to launch their new comic series on iPad together with traditional comic books. Yes, you will be able to download the copy of the comics on your iPad the very same day the books are released.

This will not only bring new readers from different countries who might not be able to get hold of the comic books as early the guys in US. It will most likely bring in younger generation of comic readers as it will be much easier to purchase a comic books on iPad rather than going down to the store.

I’m quite excited as this is the first time Comic publisher recognize how important it is to have their presence on iPad, and I’m sure more and more publishers will do that too.

1 Millions iOS Devices jailbroken by Jailbreakme.com

It is just 1 day since Jailbreakme.com is launched, and 1 million iPhone, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod Touch have been jailbroken by it. It is a huge number, much more than what we expected. This might be the largest amount of devices jailbroken on a single day.

To be honest, I would like to know the percentage of devices that was jailbroken. I will bet that 70% or more should be iPad 2, as previous jailbreak methods still can’t jailbreak iPad 2.

Of course, Apple will not just sit back and relax over this matter. Apple’s spokewoman Bethan Lloyd has confirmed that they are “aware of this reported issue and will be developing a fix that will be available in the upcoming software update”. Comex are using a PDF exploit, thus it is treated as a vulnerability for iOS, so I’m sure Apple will be releasing a update very soon.

So before anything comes out and break the Jailbreak, please proceed to Jailbreakme.com and enjoy!

Funny Organizational Chart for Apple, Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Oracle

Funny Org Chart for Technology Companies like Apple and Facebook.

Yes, Although it looks like a just for fun organizational hierarchy chart from bonkersworld. But this chart is drawn up with understanding or at least some understanding of how the technology company operate.

Apple is a one man company

Just look at how Apple’s Org chart is, is it centered around 1 man, and branched out as a company. Honestly this is how everyone feels that Apple is being run. We are pretty sure most of the products need to be approved and reviewed by Steve Jobs before its product launch. So he is the man.

Microsoft kills its own product

Microsoft have departments building products that will kill another product they are building. Products like kin when already have Windows Phone 7.

Google is a 3 man team

Google has been a 3 man team for quite a while, with its 2 founders and their CEO running the company. Although things have change slightly, but I doubt the influence have changed.

Facebook has no structure?

Honestly, I don’t know about Facebook’s Company’s Structure, or should I say no one understand it clearly yet. Thus this kind of chart was drawn?

Oracle buy and buy company.

For the past years, Oracle has transformed from a Database Empire to a Buying Empire. They have been buying and buying tech company non-stop. So that’s why they need such a strong legal team?

Are the charts similar to your view on how the company is being managed now. Tell us what you think!

Conan’s Team love Apple’s new Final Cut Pro X [Video]

Apple just recently released their new Final Cut Pro X. It is not a update to Final Cut Pro series, it is a total revamped. Due to this total revamp, Final Cut Pro X now look more like iMovie than its previous generation of Final Cut Pro. Yes, Apple rewrote Final Cut Pro X from ground up, but I feel they might have wrote Final Cut Pro X from iMovie up.

Alot of professionals who uses Final Cut Pro have problem adjusting to the new Final Cut Pro X as it seems to have lesser features and less robust than previous gen FCP. The comments they gave was it is actually iMovie Pro X. I have downloaded the FCPX, and used it for awhile, it really feels like iMovie. But it is so much better.

So I feel, Apple is really going to win over 90% of the video editors out there, who are doing short and quick videos for their blogs, commercials, training videos or even Podcast. But Apple will be forgoing the rest of the top 10% of editors who do professional videos like movies and shot films.

But who knows? Give Apple sometimes and let’s see how is the situation 1-2years later. Apple always are open to big changes, and make people change the way they look at things.

Apple’s new patent might earn them money from every smartphone out there. [Video]

Nilay Patel from Thisismynext walked through with us what is the new Apple patent all about. And how with this patent, Apple might be able to earn money from any smartphone ever made.

Yes, Apple patented the technology of a “web browser” type of app, which is touch screen. If you are able to scroll using 1 finger, but still able to pinch and zoom using 2 finger on a embed frame like google map. Then this technology is patented by Apple. To be honest, I cannot rememeber which smartphone I have seen for the past 2 years which can’t do that.

Thus Apple might be making money with this patent on virtually any smartphone out in the market. Check out the video below to see how using a mobile browser might by using apple’s patented technology.
