1 Million Pre-Orders for iPhone 4S in 24 hours

1 Million pre-orders for Apple newly announced iPhone 4S in just 24 hours.

This is crazy! It beats iPhone 4’s 600,000 pre-orders in the first 24hours!! Even as an Apple Fan Boy, I’m quite shocked that Apple has gotten such a good result, although iPhone 4S is almost like a speed bump and a camera upgrade.

Of course not to forget that Siri is quite a revolutionary intelligence voice assistant, but 1 million pre-orders is really a massive deal.

Check out Apple’s Press Info just released today:

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Steve Jobs passed away

Apple’s co founder Steve Jobs has passed away today at the age of 56. It is the saddest tech news I have ever blogged about. Steve Jobs has been such a visionary, who without him we will not have iPods, iMacs, Macbook Pros, Macbook Air, iPhone and iPad. He brought computer down to personal computer, brought music to our ears, phone that do wonders.

Steve Jobs, you will be greatly missed.

Here’s some of the statements the Tech world left for him:

Bill Gates:

I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

Google’s Sergey Bin:

From the earliest days of Google, whenever Larry and I sought inspiration for vision and leadership, we needed to look no farther than Cupertino. Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product (including the macbook I am writing this on right now). And I have witnessed it in person the few times we have met.

On behalf of all of us at Google and more broadly in technology, you will be missed very much. My condolences to family, friends, and colleagues at Apple.

Mark Zuckerberg:

Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.

US President Barack Obama:

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

Rest in Peace Steve Jobs.

AppleCares+ now covers accidental damages!

Somehow I feel this news is as exciting as Apple’s new iPhone 4S. AppleCare+ for iPhone now covers up to 2 accidental damages on top of the usual AppleCare warranty. But you have to pay Apple additional USD$49 for each accident on top of the $99 AppleCare+. Although it seems to have a catch, but I’m pretty sure it is still much cheaper than you replacing a brand new iPhone, if you accidentally dropped your iPhone and smashed the back.

Here’s the full Description:

Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90 days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling, each subject to a $49 service fee. With AppleCare+ for iPhone, Apple experts can help troubleshoot issues over the phone or at an Apple Retail Store. They’ll answer questions about iOS, Apple iPhone apps such as Mail, iMessage, and Calendar, and help you solve interconnectivity issues between your iPhone and Mac or PC. And if your iPhone needs service under the plan, Apple technical support representatives can even set up a repair during the same call.

iPhone 4S, Siri and iCloud Video

Apple introduced iPhone 4S, iOS5, iCloud and their new voice intelligent assistant Siri. What I feel that is iPhone 4S is not a major upgrade from the hardware point of view, except for the camera, but software is a crazy shift.

iCloud

Looks at iOS 5’s features, there is notification system updates and iCloud. So what’s iCloud? iCloud sync and update all your data to all your devices, from iPhone to iPad to Macs. So you can virtually work on iPhone, switch to iPad to update and edit them on your Macbook Pro before sending them for printing. You can take a picture on your iPhone, and it magically appears on your iPad and iMac.

Check out the iCloud demo video:

Siri

If you think iCloud is impressive? Check out Siri. Siri is Apple’s Smart Voice Assistant which can help you send text messenges, schedule meetings, check weather, set reminders and many many more.

You won’t know how cool it is until you watch the demo video below:

iPhone 4S

Lastly, Apple’s iPhone 4S video:

iPhone 4S will be in Singapore on 28 October 2011

Apple iPhone 4S will be available in Singapore with all 3 carriers, SingTel, Starhub and M1 on 28th October 2011. In recent years, people in Singapore are very lucky to be one of the first few countries to get new iPhones. No pricing for iPhone 4S is announced yet, but it should be very close to our current iPhone 4 pricing, which is $888 for 16GB, without contract.

So what’s new in iPhone 4S?

  • A5 Processor same as what we have in iPad 2
  • Support CMDA and GSM, although it won’t matter to us in Singapore as we are all GSM network
  • 14.4Mbps HSDPA
  • 8Mega pixel Camera, with backside illuminated senor which will allow you to take better low light pictures

As for now, it seems like Siri will not be available in Singapore just yet, let’s see how it goes.

Let’s talk iPhone Summary

iOS 5 will be release on 12 October 2011! It will be free for all devices, and will be available on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad iPod touch (4th gen and 3rd gen).

Find my friends App

Find my friends is a new App which Apple developed to help you location your friends & family. You can temporary share your location, privacy controls and parental restrictions. So it is a virtual children stalking app for parents! Pretty interesting.

iPod Nano

iPod Nano will be available for $129 for 8GB and $149 for 16GB. New iPod Nano navigates easier, track your walks and runs with the nike interface, new clock faces and is more affordable than ever!

iPod Line up

New iPod touch looks very similar to iPhone 4, now you will get white iPod touch too. iPod touch starts at $199 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. Nothing much has been updated for iPod touch from what we can see. iPod Shuffle will be $49 for 2GB. We don’t see any classic, so it might be killed.

iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S that’s it. Not iPhone 5 like some called it. Inside iPhone 4S, A5 chip will be in it, it is the same chip that we already have in iPad 2. It is 7 times faster graphics than A4 chip. Dual core processor, 2X faster CPU and 7 times faster graphics that we will get from A5 chip on iPhone 4S.

Battery Life on iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S’s battery life chart seems be almost similar to what we have on iPhone 4. Don’t think there are a much improvement from iPhone 4. But I have no complains for iPhone’s 4 Battery life.

Max Data Speeds(HSDPA) for iPhone 4S

It seems like there is an upgrade to the data speed for iPhone 4S, downlink will now max up at 14.4 and uplink at 7.2mbps.

iPhone 4S – World Phone

iPhone 4S is a World Phone, meaning you can be on CDMA and GSM network on this phone. Pretty cool for those who travel and those who live in CDMA + GSM networked countries like USA. For us in Singapore, it doesn’t really matter for us. Haha.

iPhone 4S Camera Upgrades

I think the most interesting upgrades for iPhone 4S is the camera! In the comparison, iPhone 4S can take photos within 1.1 seconds trashing most smartphone out in the market. What is more important than speed to capture the moment you want right? iPhone 4S’s camera is 8mega pixel, 73% more lights, take macro photos, 1080HD video recordings, video image stabilization and temporal noise reduction. Pretty interesting upgrade, I think camera manufacturers will be greatly affected by such a good camera in your smartphone.

Siri Voice Intelligence Assistant

Siri is an intelligence assistant that you can talk to from your iPhone. You can talk and Siri will response and do things for you like setting alarm, finding out restaurants, checking weather and so on. Not only that, Siri actually will read you your messages, and you can reply just by talking to it.

Siri will read messages sent, and you can reply to the message just by talking to it.

Hmm.. Siri is not just a voice service, but it is also integrated with Wolfram Alpha, now it is not just assistant, but it has intelligence.

You can ask Siri things like, “Siri, how many days till Christmas?” It will reply in the below:

Pretty cool technology, I’m not sure if this Siri feature will be in iPhone 4S. I really hope so.

Siri uses data to process all those information, thus it will require either 3G or Wi-Fi.

iPhone 4S Pricing

iPhone 4S $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB.

iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 will still be available for sale, $99 for 8GB iPhone 4 and Free with contract for iPhone 3GS.

iPhone 4S will be available for pre-order at October 7 and will be available for sale in US on 14th October. For the rest of the world ( 70 countries), we will be getting iPhone 4S by December. So I think Singapore is also part of the 70 countries.

Singapore will be getting iPhone 4S by 28 October!

Overall, I feel that is feels like a yearly update. Nothing much special, only the camera upgrades and Siri interest me. Seems like the next iPhone, iPhone 5 will be the phone we are all waiting for. Let’s stay tuned for more information!

Kindle Fire vs iPad 2 vs Nook Color

Kindle Fire vs iPad 2 vs Nook Color

So how is Kindle Fire going to compare with the tablet leader iPad 2 and Nook Color? Looking at the above chart with Verge created, Amazon’s Kindle Fire is only wining in price point and dual core 800mhz processor. But iPad in hardware side is still a clear winner in almost all areas except pricing.

But the success of Apple iPad is not just because of the superior hardware and snappy software but also the content that Apple provides. With the strong background of iTunes Music, Movies, TV Shows, and the recent introduction of Apple App Store & iBookStore. If this is the main reason why Apple’s iPad is the leading tablet, then Amazon also have the secret forumla of winning over the domination of iPad in tablet market.

Amazon have one of the largest music, books, movie and TV shows collection on the internet. Not just that Amazon recently open up Amazon App Store for Android Apps. They have the exact same coverage in media and entertainment as Apple. Thus I feel Kindle Fire might be first Android tablet that will be having real success.

Below are the demo video of Kindle Fire’s Amazon Silk Web Browser:

Silk Browser is a very cool browsing technology that Amazon created. It works similar to what Opera Mobile is, they uses Amazon Web Service to cache and load the website before downsizing and optimized before pushing to the Silk Browser.

Amazon Kindle Fire, $199 7-inch iPad killer

Kindle Fire

Amazon today have announced that they will be launching a new Amazon Kindle call Kindle Fire. It is a 7-inch colored tablet and will cost just $199! Amazon is very smart at their pricing for Kindle Fire, they knew they can’t fight Apple’s iPad at $499 or even $399 market. With the price range $199, it will kill alot of other Android Tablets in the market.

How Amazon bring down the Price Point?

Of course, how Amazon manage to bring their tablet down to just $199 price point? Remove. Amazon’s Kindle Fire don’t have camera, no microphones and will be Wifi only. Although it is a multi-touch color tablet, but it will only take 2 finger touch at once. No demo of the tablet yet, but one cool deal is Amazon Prime 60-days free trial comes with every Kindle Fire! They are really pushing their Prime Serve which cost $79 per year, with free 2 days shipping of any product in Amazon.

So will Kindle Fire be the real iPad killer? Maybe, with the strong backing of Amazon App Store, Streaming contents and cheap price point.

Let’s talk iPhone. October 4 2011

Let’s talk iPhone.

Apple have finally sent out invitation to media for their October 4th Event – Let’s talk iPhone. Without much question, this event will be heavily focus on iPhone and iOS. The event will be held at 10am PT at Apple’s HQ Cupertino campus in California. Seems like most rumors got it correct.

Hardware Upgrades

So will we be seeing Dual-Core A5 Processer, 8mega-pixel camera, 1GB of ram? It seems to be a reasonable upgrade to me. A5 has been on iPad 2, and it really improves graphics performance by quite abit, 1GB ram is double on what we have now on iPhone 4, which will serve well for multi-tasking. iPhone 4’s 5mp camera is still one of the best smartphone camera around, with the upgrade to 8mp, they will point and shoot less attractive.

Talk?

Of course on iOS side, we have already seen alot of new improvement during the previous keynote, but it is rumored that Siri will be heavily integrated and will be named Assistant. Siri is a voice search technology that Apple recently acquired, so is that why it is called “Let’s talk iPhone?”

Let’s all stay tuned for the October 4 iPhone Event!

Thunderbolt Display Review by AnandTech [Video]

I recently blogged about Apple’s Macbook Dream Docking Station – Thunderbolt Display. It is a docking station plus 27inch display which is very interesting.

AnandTech did a very complete review of the display, and comments overall are very good. But I do agree with him that external graphics card should be in the next generation of Thunderbolt Display. This will be especially useful for Macbook Air users. Macbook Air is already itself a very powerful device, but what it is lacking is a more powerful discrete graphics card. With this, I’m sure gamers will now don’t think twice about buying the lower powered Macbook Air.

Check out his review of Thunderbolt Display:
