Pre-Order iPhone 4S now from Singapore’s Apple Store!

You can now pre-order your Apple iPhone 4S from Singapore’s Apple Store

Apple Store in Apple have open up their pre-order site for iPhone 4S, so you can now order it with pricing starting from $948 without any contracts.

iPhone 4S Price without Contract:

16GB Black/White: $948

32GB Black/White: $1088

64GB Black/White: $1238

Shipping dates is current 1 to 2 weeks, which I think they will be shipping on 28th October 2011 as announced during iPhone Event few weeks ago.

iPhone 4S is more expensive than iPhone 4

This is weird, normally Apple will keep their price point the same, but this year iPhone 4S’s 16GB model cost $948, but iPhone 4 16GB only cost $888 last year. I’m not too sure what is the reason of the price increase, and I hope iPhone 4S with contracts will not go up too.

Updated: @ryuworks mentioned that iPhone 4S price increase is due to the spike of US dollar to Singapore dollar exchange rate during the launch period. Too bad for us, we have to stick to this price point.

If you would like to get iPhone 4S without contract, proceed the to Apple Store Singapore here. Of course, all iPhone sold in Singapore are all unlocked set, so you can put in SingTel, M1 or Starhub SIM Card without any issue.

If you don’t want Siri and a upgrade to iPhone’s Camera, iPhone 4 8GB is still available for purchase for $788 without contract.

iPhone 4S Siri is much better than Google’s voice recognition

Siri beat Android’s Voice Recognition hands down!

Rory Cellan-Jones from BBC did a quick test to see which smartphone is better in Voice Recognition, iPhone 4S’s Siri or Android’s Google Voice Recognition.

He did the test by speaking the same text into Siri in iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Tab and compared the transcribed results from both of them.

Orignal text he read:

It’s a challenge that has occupied scientists for decades and promised huge fortunes to anyone who could solve it. I’m talking about speech recognition, back in the news because it is one of the most significant features of Apple’s latest phone. Will it remain an amusing party-trick – or become the key way in which we communicate with computers?

Siri transcribed it as:

It’s a challenge that has occupied scientists the decade and promised huge fortunes to anyone who could solve it stop I’m talking about speech recognition back in the news because it is one of the most significant features of Apples latest phone STOCK will it remain unamusing party trick or become McKee way in which we communicate with COMPUTERS?

Galaxy Tab’s transcription:

If I started the decade and poets 14th avenue and hope It stops on Interstate recognItIon back In the news because It’s 1 of the most signIant pIctures of apples latest phone got the wIll remaIn In the musIc of the trIck or become a keyway computers.

From the above results, it seems like iPhone 4S’s reply is so much better than Samsung’s GalaxyTab’s. Although Apple’s Siri is release close to 1 year later than Google’s but it has already beat his competitor hands down. Congrats to Apple!

If you have not seen Siri works, Check out this nice demo [Video]

Siri is very cool!

Siri is iPhone 4S’s special feature, it not only brings voice to text capability to iPhone, it also brought a smart voice assistant along. Siri is almost like your personal assistant who you can ask to set your appointment, alarm clock for tomorrow, read you your latest text message, check the nearest italian restaurant or even entertain you!

Check out this real life demo of Siri, I feel it is very well done and he demo-ed most of the important features and function of Siri:

First iPhone 4S Drop test, it did not survive the 2nd drop. [Video]

Drop Test for iPhone 4S

Honestly, I hate drop test. Why? Because I would rather they give the new iPhone 4S to me! Haha. Of course, they did the drop test because they are from some iPhone repair company, so I’m sure they will get it repair as soon as they get back to office.

But this drop test shown us how fragile iPhone 4S front glass is. It survived the first drop, but the second drop was intentionally dropped flat facing down on the concrete floor around above his eye level.

Anyway, below is the video on the first ever drop test for iPhone 4S:

Box.net offers 50GB storage for all iOS users for life

Box.net is a web storage service, which works quite similar to Dropbox. Box.net allows users to upload files, share files and edit files over any devices, which includes desktop, iPhone, iPad, Android and more. They are having a promotion, Box.net now offers all existing or new iOS users a free upgrade to 50GB of storage!

50GB is quite a huge storage for free. Apple and Dropbox are charging 100 and 99 dollars per year for 50GB of storage, but Box.net is giving out them for free. So how do you sign up for this promotion?

Steps on getting your 50GB storage

It is not very straight forward, you need to do the following steps:

  1. Go to Box.net via your desktop, Mac or PC (sign up for account or login to your existing one)
  2. Go to Files -> Click on Create Folder
  3. Click on the downward point arrow -> Folder Properties -> Advance Properties
  4. Click on email option tab -> Check on the Allow uploads to this folder via email and click OK
  5. Download or update your Box.net iPhone/iPad App and login.
  6. You should be upgraded to 50GB of Storage and 100mb of file limit per file.
  7. Please note that the Promotion ends at 2nd December 2011

Box.net is very generous on giving out storage, but I really hope their desktop sync will be free. You need to know that Box.net do not provide free desktop sync like what you have for dropbox, thus to upload your files to box.net, you either have to use their upload function on box.net website or upload them via iPhone/iPad. It is not the easiest and fastest way to share/sync files, but it will be quite useful to have such a huge storage online.

I’m thinking of using them as my important files backup for example Family Photos and some important documents. Nevertheless, don’t waste the opportunity to get the storage. Be sure do get your free storage before 2nd December 2011!

Siri ported to iPhone 4! [Video]

iPhone 4 running Siri

One of the most disappoint fact is that Siri and Voice to Text are not all coming to iPhone 4, even with iOS 5 update. Yes, Siri will only be available on iPhone 4S. According to Apple, Siri is not on iPhone 4 or below is because Siri need the processing power of A5 dual core chip.

It doesn’t really make sense to me, because iPad 2 is also running on A5 chip, so I think Apple hope that Siri is the killer feature of iPhone 4S, so people will upgrade to the new iPhone.

But worry no more, Mr. Troughton-Smith has already ported Siri to iPhone 4! Pretty cool right? Although it is only Siri UI that was ported over, but I’m sure he is working on moving the whole Siri to iPhone 4. Very soon, we will be commanding Siri and getting Siri to do work for us, hopefully.

Here’s a demo of him running Siri on iPhone 4S:

Siri can’t really handle broken English or Asian Accents [Video]

Siri is still a beta software

We have seen Scott Forstall demo-ed iPhone 4S’s Siri, it works very very well. I have recently blogged about Siri works like a charm in real life usage, but no. Siri is beta for some reasons, Siri can’t really handle accents especially Asian Accents, like Japanese or Chinese I suppose.

So I assume, Siri will be out of beta only when Apple believe it can handle the speech from anyone in the world. It will be a tough process, but I have alot of confidence on Apple on achieving it. Siri’s voice recognition now is already one of the best in the world. Give them some time. I

For the below demo video, we are looking at a Japanese guy trying out Siri with English, apperantly Siri have issue figuring out what he is trying to say. It is quite funny, I think the guy is quite mad over Siri, do check out the video:

Siri works like a charm in real life! [Video]

Siri works great in everyday life use!

One of the greatest new feature is the innovative intelligence voice assistant Siri. We have seen Scott Forstall demo the use of Siri on stage during the announcement of iPhone 4S. But how good will it be in real life usage?

The answer is – Equally Good! Amazingly good. To be honest, I’m amazed by how smooth and accurate the voice recognition and reply from Siri.

Check out the video on how smooth and accurate Siri is from Stuff.tv:
