New Messages App for OS X, you can now send iMessage to any iOS users on your Mac

Mountain Lion

Apple have just announced Mountain Lion OS, which will be coming to us pretty soon. It will be a refresh with some very cool updates, almost integrating iOS into Mac OS.

Messages

One of the update is an App – Messages.  Messages is almost like iMessage in iOS, but more powerful. In Messages App, you can not only send unlimited iMessages to any iOS/Mac users, you can now also chat via gtalk, Yahoo! Messager or even Jabber.  But of course, the killer feature is iMessage.

Send iMessage to anyone holding on to iOS Devices via your Mac

So what does this means? It means you can virtually reply messages to anyone who is using iPhone via your Mac, you don’t even need to talk your iPhone to do that. How cool is that? Ever seen the launch of Whatsapp, iMessages and so on, I have been thinking, why am I still restricted in replying to my friends via my iPhone since I already have a Mac infront of me. Going back to iPhone to reply a message honestly breaks my workflow.

What I think about Messages

With Apple’s new Message Client on Mac, I can reply to any iMessage I receive, I can even do FaceTime, send photos and video over to any iOS devices! How cool is that? I have been testing it for awhile, it has been pretty good, although I have encounter some issues off and on, but it is still in beta.

You can download beta Messages App now from Apple’s website and give it a try now!

How well does iPhone 4S Siri works with Asian Accent? [Video]

Beta Siri

Siri as mentioned by Apple is still a beta software, I think the reason it is still in Beta is because of a few reasons.

Firstly, Siri is almost a ground-breaking Technology, the ability to understand real-life English usage, when you don’t have to speak in a weird way in order for Siri to understand.

Secondly, Siri is only available in a few language, and is mainly US and UK English. For Apple, they are targeting people around the world, thus I’m sure Chinese, Japanese, French and many other language are in their road map. Thus they won’t deem it as a complete product before people from around the world can use.

Siri vs Asian

So what will happen now if people in Asia uses iPhone 4S now? The Siri results may vary depending on people to people, but I would think that the result won’t be as good as people in the US, as our English in asia have our own Asian Accent.

So let’s see how will Siri fair against, Asian Accent like Malay, Indian and Singaporean?

If you have not seen Siri works, Check out this nice demo [Video]

Siri is very cool!

Siri is iPhone 4S’s special feature, it not only brings voice to text capability to iPhone, it also brought a smart voice assistant along. Siri is almost like your personal assistant who you can ask to set your appointment, alarm clock for tomorrow, read you your latest text message, check the nearest italian restaurant or even entertain you!

Check out this real life demo of Siri, I feel it is very well done and he demo-ed most of the important features and function of Siri:

Box.net offers 50GB storage for all iOS users for life

Box.net is a web storage service, which works quite similar to Dropbox. Box.net allows users to upload files, share files and edit files over any devices, which includes desktop, iPhone, iPad, Android and more. They are having a promotion, Box.net now offers all existing or new iOS users a free upgrade to 50GB of storage!

50GB is quite a huge storage for free. Apple and Dropbox are charging 100 and 99 dollars per year for 50GB of storage, but Box.net is giving out them for free. So how do you sign up for this promotion?

Steps on getting your 50GB storage

It is not very straight forward, you need to do the following steps:

  1. Go to Box.net via your desktop, Mac or PC (sign up for account or login to your existing one)
  2. Go to Files -> Click on Create Folder
  3. Click on the downward point arrow -> Folder Properties -> Advance Properties
  4. Click on email option tab -> Check on the Allow uploads to this folder via email and click OK
  5. Download or update your Box.net iPhone/iPad App and login.
  6. You should be upgraded to 50GB of Storage and 100mb of file limit per file.
  7. Please note that the Promotion ends at 2nd December 2011

Box.net is very generous on giving out storage, but I really hope their desktop sync will be free. You need to know that Box.net do not provide free desktop sync like what you have for dropbox, thus to upload your files to box.net, you either have to use their upload function on box.net website or upload them via iPhone/iPad. It is not the easiest and fastest way to share/sync files, but it will be quite useful to have such a huge storage online.

I’m thinking of using them as my important files backup for example Family Photos and some important documents. Nevertheless, don’t waste the opportunity to get the storage. Be sure do get your free storage before 2nd December 2011!

Siri can’t really handle broken English or Asian Accents [Video]

Siri is still a beta software

We have seen Scott Forstall demo-ed iPhone 4S’s Siri, it works very very well. I have recently blogged about Siri works like a charm in real life usage, but no. Siri is beta for some reasons, Siri can’t really handle accents especially Asian Accents, like Japanese or Chinese I suppose.

So I assume, Siri will be out of beta only when Apple believe it can handle the speech from anyone in the world. It will be a tough process, but I have alot of confidence on Apple on achieving it. Siri’s voice recognition now is already one of the best in the world. Give them some time. I

For the below demo video, we are looking at a Japanese guy trying out Siri with English, apperantly Siri have issue figuring out what he is trying to say. It is quite funny, I think the guy is quite mad over Siri, do check out the video:

Siri works like a charm in real life! [Video]

Siri works great in everyday life use!

One of the greatest new feature is the innovative intelligence voice assistant Siri. We have seen Scott Forstall demo the use of Siri on stage during the announcement of iPhone 4S. But how good will it be in real life usage?

The answer is – Equally Good! Amazingly good. To be honest, I’m amazed by how smooth and accurate the voice recognition and reply from Siri.

Check out the video on how smooth and accurate Siri is from Stuff.tv:

Let’s talk iPhone Summary

iOS 5 will be release on 12 October 2011! It will be free for all devices, and will be available on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad iPod touch (4th gen and 3rd gen).

Find my friends App

Find my friends is a new App which Apple developed to help you location your friends & family. You can temporary share your location, privacy controls and parental restrictions. So it is a virtual children stalking app for parents! Pretty interesting.

iPod Nano

iPod Nano will be available for $129 for 8GB and $149 for 16GB. New iPod Nano navigates easier, track your walks and runs with the nike interface, new clock faces and is more affordable than ever!

iPod Line up

New iPod touch looks very similar to iPhone 4, now you will get white iPod touch too. iPod touch starts at $199 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. Nothing much has been updated for iPod touch from what we can see. iPod Shuffle will be $49 for 2GB. We don’t see any classic, so it might be killed.

iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S that’s it. Not iPhone 5 like some called it. Inside iPhone 4S, A5 chip will be in it, it is the same chip that we already have in iPad 2. It is 7 times faster graphics than A4 chip. Dual core processor, 2X faster CPU and 7 times faster graphics that we will get from A5 chip on iPhone 4S.

Battery Life on iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S’s battery life chart seems be almost similar to what we have on iPhone 4. Don’t think there are a much improvement from iPhone 4. But I have no complains for iPhone’s 4 Battery life.

Max Data Speeds(HSDPA) for iPhone 4S

It seems like there is an upgrade to the data speed for iPhone 4S, downlink will now max up at 14.4 and uplink at 7.2mbps.

iPhone 4S – World Phone

iPhone 4S is a World Phone, meaning you can be on CDMA and GSM network on this phone. Pretty cool for those who travel and those who live in CDMA + GSM networked countries like USA. For us in Singapore, it doesn’t really matter for us. Haha.

iPhone 4S Camera Upgrades

I think the most interesting upgrades for iPhone 4S is the camera! In the comparison, iPhone 4S can take photos within 1.1 seconds trashing most smartphone out in the market. What is more important than speed to capture the moment you want right? iPhone 4S’s camera is 8mega pixel, 73% more lights, take macro photos, 1080HD video recordings, video image stabilization and temporal noise reduction. Pretty interesting upgrade, I think camera manufacturers will be greatly affected by such a good camera in your smartphone.

Siri Voice Intelligence Assistant

Siri is an intelligence assistant that you can talk to from your iPhone. You can talk and Siri will response and do things for you like setting alarm, finding out restaurants, checking weather and so on. Not only that, Siri actually will read you your messages, and you can reply just by talking to it.

Siri will read messages sent, and you can reply to the message just by talking to it.

Hmm.. Siri is not just a voice service, but it is also integrated with Wolfram Alpha, now it is not just assistant, but it has intelligence.

You can ask Siri things like, “Siri, how many days till Christmas?” It will reply in the below:

Pretty cool technology, I’m not sure if this Siri feature will be in iPhone 4S. I really hope so.

Siri uses data to process all those information, thus it will require either 3G or Wi-Fi.

iPhone 4S Pricing

iPhone 4S $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB.

iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 will still be available for sale, $99 for 8GB iPhone 4 and Free with contract for iPhone 3GS.

iPhone 4S will be available for pre-order at October 7 and will be available for sale in US on 14th October. For the rest of the world ( 70 countries), we will be getting iPhone 4S by December. So I think Singapore is also part of the 70 countries.

Singapore will be getting iPhone 4S by 28 October!

Overall, I feel that is feels like a yearly update. Nothing much special, only the camera upgrades and Siri interest me. Seems like the next iPhone, iPhone 5 will be the phone we are all waiting for. Let’s stay tuned for more information!

Tim Cook is now Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs Chairman of Apple’s Board

25 August 2011, Steve Jobs Resigned

25 August 2011 is the day Apple and all Apple fanboys will remember. Today Steve Jobs resign as CEO from Apple, and Tim Cook took over. Although news exploded around the world, saying that Apple will change or die off due to Steve Jobs stepping down, but I seriously don’t think so. Steve Jobs is now Chairman of Board of Apple, he still have lots of say and decision making capability in Apple.

Steve Jobs has not been feeling too well since his liver gave way, although he managed to had a liver transplant, but he’s health never really return fully. Because of that he was on and off in office, I’m sure he is spending more time at home resting, but still make most of the important decision in Apple. But this can’t go for long, Steve Jobs knows that, lots of things still need to have a CEO physically in office, or around the world to make sure things goes as planned.

Decision to step down as CEO

Making this decision might be one of the biggest ever for Steve Jobs, no one love Apple as much as him, no one cares and wants Apple to be as successful as him. To be able to make this decision, he must have made sure his current team with Tim Cook leading will be able to bring Apple to new heights.

Chairman of Apple’s Board

Although Steve Jobs will not be highly involved in the day to day decision making of Apple, but as chairman of Board, he still holds very huge strategic decision’s power. I will assume Tim Cook will still have to report to him, let him review products and decide when is the time for new product release.

My thoughts of Apple’s Future

It can’t get any better in my point of view. Having Steve Jobs as more of a advisory role, and Tim Cook there to run the day to day business. I’m sure things will only get better! Apple’s Executive Team have not changed much except Steve’s stepped down. Thus I have no worries on Apple’s future, and more innovative products will be launch very soon!

Steve Jobs’ Biography to be release on 21 November 2011!

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is finally going to release his first official Biography ever! According to Barnes and Noble have already put up ‘Steve Jobs’ for pre-release and will be available on November 21 2011. Not sure why did they brought this forward from the original release date at March 6 2012.

This Book is written by Walter Isaacson and have written it based on over 40 interviews with Steve Jobs and his family and friends. I’m sure this book will be a very interesting read, and I can’t wait for it to be release.

Full Description of Steve Jobs:

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues this book chronicles the rollercoaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

It is also a book about innovation. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the 21st century was to connect creativity with technology, so he built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off limits and instead encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly even foes, former girlfriends, and colleagues he had once fired or infuriated. “I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of, such as getting my girlfriend pregnant when I was 23 and the way I handled that,” he said. “But I don’t have any skeletons in my closet that can’t be allowed out.”

Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. Likewise, his friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

He was not a model boss or human being, tidily packaged for emulation. Driven by demons, he could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is thus both instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.
